An Example of Weapons Training

“As the man grasps his sword, so does he grasp his world.”

The sword is part of the bladed weaponry program available to the student. Study with the sword moves through 5 stages. Jook Do (or training sword), hard wood sword, metal sword with edge dulled, live blade, and mental sword.

Training with the sword encompasses one man patterns with the weapon, but so much more is needed for an understanding of the blade. Sword against sword tactics, sword against longer weapons such as spear, and sword with multiple armed and unarmed attackers are some exercises done to expose the student to the various applications of weaponry.

Training with a weapon will develop physical conditioning of the practitioner and increase their ability to focus. Focusing through the weapon (referred to as Moo Ki Gong) and learning to project energies of the body through the weapon is an eventual goal of weaponry. One will also be able to apply the concepts learned with the sword to a smaller weapon such as the knife. The marked advantage of a complete system is apparent here, as all techniques build upon each other for a greater understanding of the martial art, rather than a disjointed set of techniques. This strategy is also referenced in the In Ji Yong Firearms courses.
